This month’s issue of Masterful Scrapbook Design focuses on Typography. Yes, you will get a review and reference for type alignment, leading, tracking, kerning, and typeface selection.

And then you’ll get real value: ideas, how-tos, and sources for designing masterfully with type.

The teachers for this topic are Tiffany Tillman, Lisa Dickinson, Emily Pitts, Paula Gilarde, and Anna Aspnes, and they are generous with their favorite tricks and sources, showing you how to:

make a border of type using Word or Photoshop

combine fonts to make your own original typeface

get “letter-press” looks with Photoshop techniques,

use type like patterned paper,

and much more.

Hi, all,

Debbie here to fill you in on the changes going on at Get It Scrapped. They’re all aimed at making sure you can still access your previous purchases while moving ahead with a richer schedule of new classes.

Here’s a rundown of what’s going on:

New classes are moving.

I will no longer be offering classes taught by teachers other than myself at Get It Scrapped starting January 1st, 2012. There are three reasons for this: 1) Our classes and student population have outgrown the systems in place; 2) I’d like to get back to teaching rather than managing a busy classroom; and 3) I want to focus on Masterful Scrapbook Design.

4 brand new classes from Get It Scrapped teachers are slated for January, 2012 at CreativePassionClasses.com.

Masterful Scrapbook Design is staying here.

Much of my freed-up time will go to working more on Masterful Scrapbook Design. This model lets me both teach and work with a team of teachers that changes monthly to produce exceptional content in multiple formats: pdf workshops, video, audio, transcripts and interactive webinars. I love that we offer this for an affordable $12.50/month and that our membership keeps growing.

Over the last couple of weeks, Masterful has gotten a face lift that makes finding and accessing the materials in your library easier. And . . . we’ve launched the MSD Free Sampler Membership. Free members may attend (or access recordings of) one live webinar each month and receive two lessons (varying from gallery to focus lesson to seminar content). Sign up today and immediately get access to the sampler materials for all of 2012.

The Get It Scrapped blog is staying here.

We’ve built up a library of almost 500 articles with ideas and how-tos for making great-looking and meaningful scrapbook pages. All of these are staying right here and will be added to. Please keep reading!

Tami and Amy are still a part of the Get It Scrapped team.

Tami Taylor will continue to administer and teach at Masterful Scrapbook Design (even as she moves forward with Creative Passion Classes).

Amy Kingsford will continue to teach at Masterful Scrapbook Design and provide support and content development here at Get It Scrapped (even as she moves forward with her new site AmyKingsford.com).

You may still access your past classes.

ALL of the the classes you’ve purchased in the past are still accessible in the forums and the classroom. They will be available throughout 2012. All of the materials for these classes (including videos) are downloadable for saving on your computer. I am not going anywhere. I will still be here, answering email, providing support, and making sure you can access past classes.

Here’s where you can find our teachers in the new year.

Several of us will be teaching at Creative Passion Classes which is owned by Tami Taylor. The classroom is already up there and the forums are integrated. Say goodbye to the recent glitchiness with registration at Get It Scrapped, and say goodbye to logging into the forums separately.

Maria Ontiveros is from El Granada, California (a semi-rural coastal town about twenty miles south of San Francisco). In cyberspace, she goes by her childhood nickname “Rinda” (a condensed version of Maria Linda). Maria’s artistic interests include scrapbooking, card making, photography, art journaling and mixed media collage. She has been happily married for 25 years, and has two wonderful children (Henry, 15, and Clara, 12). Maria makes her living as a law professor at the University of San Francisco, where her area of specialty is labor and employment law, with an emphasis on workplaces issues affecting immigrants and women of color.

When I asked Maria to tell us a little more about her life as a Scrapbooker…here’s what she had to say:

I started scrapbooking in 1994 when Creative Memories was just starting to expand. My husband and I needed to create a scrapbook as part of the adoption process, and one of my friends had just been to a CM party, so she got me started. In 2001, I joined Club Scrap and became completely obsessed with scrapbooking!

I am mainly a chronological scrapbooker, scrapping the regular events of our lives. So, most of my scrapbook pages are about the kids’ activities, family gatherings and vacations. I have very slowly been working on a heritage scrapbook as well. I’m a non-digi, paper girl all the way.

I tend to scrapbook in bursts – at weekend getaways or in response to online classes. I usually scrapbook in the morning, after the kids are at school and before I feel the need to get “real work” done.

I think what stands out in my scapbooking style is that I scrap a lot of pictures! My typical scrapbook layout is a two page spread, featuring nine photographs and lots of journaling. The pages tend to be linear and fairly uncluttered.

My scrappy must-haves include my large tonic guillotine cutter, my ATG tape gun, Club Scrap paper, ink and brads.

Three things on my scrappy wish-list include more Tim Holtz distress inks, a crop-o-dile, and every single paper made by Graphic 45!

I’d really like to try out all those new texture and embossing folders that Tim Holtz and others have created, but I haven’t had a chance yet.

I tend to draw my inspiration primarily from my photographs and the story I want to tell with them. This leads me to a certain color palette, style of papers and embellishments.

I have two favorite GIS classes: Building Pages with Debbie Hodge and Art Journaling 101 with Dina Wakley. Building Pages really helped me understand why I liked certain page styles more than others and helped my scrapbooking evolve, while still remaining true to my own style. Dina’s class opened up the world of art journaling to me in a way that allows me to record my memories and thoughts and to be creative on an almost daily basis.

I love this layout first because it’s a picture that made me stop and catch my breath. The focal image photograph made me realize just how grown up my daughter and her friend have become! Truthfully, I still think of them as toddlers, but here they really appear to be on the cusp of becoming teenagers! I also love the contrasting colors and the assortment of embellishments I used (the painted chipboard flourishes, the various ribbons, all the charms). Finally, I love it because it was a stretch for me – I don’t tend to leave “white space” on my pages, but I did hear and I love the way it turned out.

Sharon’s Blog: Dreams of My Creative Mind

Sharon Linda Knopic (who was given her sister Linda’s name who passed away one year and a day before Sharon’s birth, as a middle name) has always lived in the Hershey, PA area—home of Hershey Chocolate and the Three Mile Island nuclear facility. Though Sharon would describe herself as “technically” living alone, she also shares her home with two dogs (Disney and Scully) and two Siamese kitties (Clarkie and Pearl) She also receives frequent visits from all of the geese and ducks on the lake she lives beside. In addition to being a scrapbooker, Sharon plays both the piano and the organ, and also loves to crochet, sew, and quilt.

I recently asked Sharon a few questions about her hobby…so let’s hear what Sharon had to say about her scrapbooking in her own words:

I’ve been scrapbooking since 1996, the year after my mother died, and left so many priceless photos of the family. I wanted to give my siblings their own photos, so I did my first albums for them. Since then I became the first teacher at Hershey’s “Times to Remember” LSS and taught at the Great American Scrapbook Conventions and Memories Expos.

I scrapbook two things: 1) my mother’s heritage photos, and 2) my life .
My goal is to have names to go with all of my pictures, from the turn of the 1800’s into the 1900’s, before I’m done scrapping.

While I love scrapbooking with my friends in Paradise, Lancaster County, PA, I really enjoy scrapbooking on my bed. Before I had a scrapbook room, that’s where I scrapped, and old habits are hard to break. I do try to do a little each evening, but most of my scrapbooking is done on the weekend. Once winter comes, I love my hobby even more – snow falling and scrapping with cocoa – it doesn’t get any better than that!

I’m an anything-goes scrapbooker, no one style in particular. If I see an idea I like, I’ll try it. I really love to hand-cut things, so I’m one of the few people who didn’t buy a Cricut because of that. To me, that makes my pages mine –I love to freehand draw or cut something and then place it on my page.

If I could only keep three supplies, it would have to be my Bazzil cardstock supply, my Scrappy Glue, and my tiny pointy scissors. I could put together most pages with just those three items.

Always on my “wish list” is more storage, although my son teases me that I should “store” my supplies in a scrapbook. No one likes smart-aleck kids! Besides that my other two wishes would be MORE Scrappy Glue and more cardstock. Notice how the word “more” keeps coming up, much like it does with other scrapbookers?!

I really would love to have the luxury to incorporate more art journaling pages into my scrapbooks, but right now, it seems like I’m going to die with a lot of pictures still to be put into albums!

I have a group of four gals – Deb, Debbie, Cherie (a GIS’er) and Mindy. These gals are my inspiration. I love them both in their spirits as well as their artistic abilities, and we feed off each other. We give each other weekly challenges, and that’s where almost all my inspiration comes from.

My favorite class is between Oodles of Doodles and Building Pages. I can’t decide which one taught me the most – and honestly, that’s what classes are all about – learning new things, to keep the hobby alive, and making you constantly pleased with the finished result. These two classes did just that. But then there’s the “When Life Gives you Lemons” and Tania Willis’ ever-thought-provoking handmade items. OK. Put me down as being unable to pick a single favorite class!

This is my favorite layout. I did it years ago, and it still is the one I consider to be my favorite. It’s not overly artsy, but it captured the moment like no other had before or has since. It was the first time the older two (and the little guy) had ever seen the ocean – and they had to drive there that first night, even though we were staying a full week. And I stood back, watching my son explain how the water went on and on forever. And how the waves were lapping, just as the journaling says. I was also proud of my “crabs, seashells, and beach at night” – done using different papers, punches, and tearing. I can go back to that night whenever I look at this page, even though the “little guy” is now 21, and plays professional hockey.

Dina lives in Glendale, AZ with her 3 boys and husband. She grew up all over the place including in Ohio, Michigan and England! Dina volunteers as a docent at the Phoenix Art Musuem and loves giving tours to school kids. As you could guess, Dina absolutely loves everything about paper arts, especially art journaling, mixed media art, and scrapbooking. One of Dina’s deepest passions—aside from art—is traveling! Dina also enjoys cooking good food, eating good food, hanging out with good friends, and reading good books!

When I asked Dina a little bit about her art and her creative process, here is what she had to say:

I have been scrapbooking since 1995…for Christmas that year my mom gave me a binder, a package of Rainbow Brite cardstock, sheet protectors, and a black Zig pen.

I mostly scrap my 3 boys…love them!

I don’t mind going to crops, but I scrapbook best at home in my studio…which is a fancy way of saying a room full of art stuff, and it’s always a mess.

I would classify myself as a Artsy, eclectic scrapbooker.

Some must haves I’m never without are my black ink pad for inking edges, acrylic paint, spray ink and my sewing machine.

Three things on my wish list–I think I’d like a Silhouette machine so I could cut my own masks. I’d also like a large-format printer…and I want my studio redesigned so I have a concrete-sealed floor and a utility sink.

Hmm…I can’t think of any techniques that I want to try and haven’t . I’ve been around a long time, so I’ve tried almost everything!

I usually get my inspiration from art…especially seeing art in person.

I’ve loved all of my classes. Masterful Art Journaling was really fun to write…and it took me 4 solid weeks of work to write it. I made over 90 art journal pages for that class alone!

I don’t have one favorite layout (I actually resist favorites…too many good things to choose just one favorite). But I really like “My Loves”…I used molding paste and paint to do the hearts.

On a personal note I’d like to say that Dina is a huge inspiration to me. Although I am not an “art journaler,” the techniques and inspiration offered in each one of Dina’s classes have opened my mind to a whole new world of possibilities when it comes to my paper-crafting. Thanks so much for taking the time to share a little bit with us this month Dina! I’m sure all of your students enjoyed learning more about you, just as much as I have!

Linda’s Blog: Coffee Chat

Linda Bizjak (aka Larkensnanny) lives in Columbus, Ohio with her sweet husband Edward. They are fortunate enough to live right next door to their oldest daughter, her daughter’s partner, and three grandchildren. Linda has four grown daughters and one stepson. She has eight grandchildren who she loves to spoil and spend most of her time with. In addition to scrapbooking, Linda also keeps busy with crafts and sewing. Linda has worn many different hats throughout the years, holding jobs that include running a fashion business, a certified daycare, and 25 years of teaching sign language. Crafting has always been her favorite way to spend her time. She especially loves making dolls and other sewing projects.

When we asked Linda some questions about her hobby, here’s what she had to say:

I have been scrapbooking for about 15 or 20 years now. I started out with the Creative Memories format and have evolved from there. I have been a consultant for both Creative Memories and Close to My Heart products.

My favorite subject to scrap is usually my grandchildren, but I also enjoy doing heritage pages of my family and distant relatives. I especially love telling the stories and hope that my current stories of my immediate family will someday be enjoyed by future generations.

I have a lovely scrap room in the basement of our house and and now that I am retired I find myself in my craft room at least part of every day. I also love going out to crops and retreats and do that as often as I can.

My style of scrapping has changed drastically over time. I started out with the little triangle cardstock in the corner of every page and all the photos cut either in a circle or oval. Now I love the grungy look and I use a much more planned sketch to make the layout interesting and put the focus where I really want it. I have learned so much from being a part of this GIS site and just know I will continue to learn and my style will change again and again.

I don’t think I could possibly do a layout without my two cutters. I have a small one for trimming photos and a large one for cutting cardstock and printed paper. I love my Cricut Expressions machine and use it constantly for making titles and other die cuts.

I always have a wish list of cartridges that I want for my Expression, but I also love trying new gadgets and the latest one that I am wishing for is the i-rock tool for attaching bling to a page. I really think my biggest wish is for a new computer so that I can have Photoshop and other cool editing programs for my photos and pages.

The technique that I wish I knew how to do is to edit and alter my photos better. I would love to be more savvy in using Photoshop and other tricks like making a collage of photos into a word. On a simpler line, I really wish I knew how to work with masks to get more interesting effects on a page.

My inspiration comes mostly from seeing other people’s work. GIS is a gold mine of inspiration and instruction. I love browsing through the gallery just to find something that tickles me that day. I also love books that have been published by Debbie Hodge, Sherry Steveson, as well as the Page Maps and other sketches. I really love sketches and it helps me get started so much faster. I don’t always stick to the sketch, but it gives me a bit of direction in a concrete way.

My very favorite class here at GIS is Page Parts. I feel like I really learned the basics from that class and I could go to any extreme that I wanted to after I got down the basics. However, I have to say I have taken nearly every one of the classes offered here and I have never had a bad one. They are always so clear and so instructive, encouraging me to put my own flare on to it. (Editor’s note: While Page Parts is no longer offered here, much of the material from that class is covered in our free class Where Scrapbooking Ideas Come From.)

It was very hard to decide on one particular layout that I call a favorite. I tend to put a great deal of sentiment into my pages and at the time of construction, they are all favorites. I am choosing for now the latest layout that I did of my brother Beetle. I just like the way it came together with the rustic look and the old newspaper article. The dog tags were a fun addition because I thought of this layout as the Making of Beetle Bailey.

A big thank you to Linda for sharing with us this month. Linda has been a dear friend to many of us for a couple of years now and I hope you enjoyed taking a closer look at some of her work, while learning some new things about her!
