This sketch solves a problem in a really fun way. Ever take a series of photos and you’ve got one of your subjects looking away or blinking in the best shot? Sure you do. We all do. And, quite often, I can use photoshop to combine the two shots. It wasn’t working, though with this photo. I’d changed my angle and distance, and my son had changed his stance. The solution was to crop a photo of my son only from the photo I liked of him. I then layered that matted photo on top of the original — with a bit of a tilt.

I used the one-enlarged photo option to scrapbook this photo of my brothers riding our horse Cecil 30+ years ago. Rather than include a title on the page, I used a monogram for our family name on  a vintage ticket. The Villa Didot font comes in four styles: outline, carved, cutout, and filled. I used the outline style in blue and the carved style in green and layered the two for my monogram “H.”

I subbed in a strip of tickets for the sketch’s blue paper strip. Think of what you could use in its stead: use ribbon, torn paper, or a series of tags, perhaps.

This sketch makes a “pretty” page and offers lots of opportunity to have fun with borders and embellishments. On the layout below, three spots are isolated by white space and each of these spots can be treated as a cluster to be embellished individually AND as part of a whole. You can back up the main photo with paint, rub-ons, mist, and the digital equivalents of any of these. I used Katie Pertiet’s From My Bookshelf Blendables No 3 to both create a foundation for my focal point and provide a page title.

Consider that the blocks on any of these can be easily modified: combine small blocks to accommodate one larger photo, break up larger blocks to hold your photo and and embellishments or paper blocks that fill the space; don’t worry about all of the edges lining up–the charm here is in the casual approach to the blocked design.

When I was scrapbooking a day spent in Boston at a show and then going out to dinner, I needed more than a one-page layout to get all the photos into my album — but i didn’t really want to make a two-page spread. These coordinated designs worked well — allowing me to scrapbook the show on one page and time with friends and dinner on a second page.
