#95680 More praise for GIS that I think you all will appreciate

Posted by DebbieHodge on 05 July 2015 - 08:36 AM

Got this from Katherine, who is frequently here in the forums:

Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for creating an amazing site. I love the way you’ve structured the learning environment and appreciate your focus on design rather than product. I really do only a minimal amount of “scrapbooking” for my memory keeping, instead using a mix of photography, videography, art journaling and photo artistry, and heavy use of Facebook as a mini-journaling repository (with pics and journaling). You’d think the site wouldn’t be useful for someone like me who doesn’t crank out 100’s of layouts, but even something such as the layout design principles inform my other artistic pursuits. I also really appreciate the community. They are kind, helpful, never snarky or mean and there’s a reasonable number of people so you don’t feel awash in a sea of a thousand anonymous voices. - Katherine Malm.

#95222 praise for the Smart & Smartassed women hanging out here

Posted by DebbieHodge on 11 June 2015 - 07:07 AM

Here's an email I got last week about GIS and I thought you all, our community, who hang out in the forums and often come to the live events would appreciate it.
Cathy said:
Although I read and listen to other scrapbook blogs/podcasts/YT videos, GIS is the only paid subscription I have. The education provided by both you and the community is by far, in my opinion, the best around. And, honestly, although there might be others to which I might like to subscribe, my retirement dollars will only stretch so far, so I choose GIS because of the overall value. Besides, I think some of the smartest and smartassed women hang out there and I like to pretend I'm one of them, too!
Time after time, after listening to interviews/office hours, I think to myself that we all are related: We are women who are just trying to be the best woman, wife/mother/grandmother, daughter/sister, _______fill in the blank we can be, writing the stories of our lives one layout at a time.
Thanks for all the encouragement!

#91542 Calvinball for Dummies

Posted by doris sander on 05 March 2015 - 08:07 PM

not imply that anyone here is a dummy, far from it! but there are those yellow how to books, so . . .

and i probably should have posted this last week, but no time, no time!  at least we'll have it for next year, right?

some of you might be feeling a little overwhelmed/confused at this point.

here is the way i approach calvinball:

first off, the two main points to calvinball are to have fun and be productive.  keep that foremost in your mind while deciding how to play.

which leads to the second thing.  you have to decide for yourself how to play.  the rules are elastic.  that is the essence of calvinball.  there are no prizes, there's no declared winner.  there are only bragging rights and friendly banter.  and fun!  so if it's not fun or friendly, move on.

i am not a purist like celeste.  i do like to earn a few bonus points.  my personal ratio is to try and keep my "real i actually made something" points to at least 33% of my total points (usually i end up at just 25%, but it's good to have goals).  second i focus on the publicity and team building points.  i think it's important to support debbie's site in any way i can and i think it's important to build up my fellow scrapbookers.  then i have fun with the challenge points.  i don't try to get every single point possible for every layout.  once or twice i may try to deliberately create a layout that gets me an obscene amount of points because that is fun.  it's not fun every single time though.  then it becomes work without a purpose because i'm not actually producing much of anything and it's tedious.  i tend to use the challenges as prompts, going in and grabbing a new one that appeals to me and using that as a starting point for my next project.  i might use something like the st. patrick's day theme more than once because it appeals to me this time of year and helps me get projects done that i want to do this time of year.  i wouldn't generally use the handwriting rule on every layout i make because i use my own handwriting on every layout i make and that's kinda boring to me.  but then, this is just how i view the game.  some ideas for you to ponder.  make your game stretch as you will.

here is how i keep up with my own points.  i basically just keep adding new bonus points to the bottom as i use them.  everyone comes up with their own format, but if you're new to the game, i have found that this works for me:

***note: this is our first time doing a leaderboard and it is VERY helpful if you keep a running tally of your GRAND TOTAL and your SCRAPPY POINTS at the very top of your stats post.***

scrappy points: 7.5

layouts - 1

pocket pages - 1

mini-album pages - 0

art journal pages - 0

mini art journal pages - 0

decorated planner pages - 1.5

cards/tags - 4

craft projects - 0

publicity points: 4

blog - 1

instagram - 1

facebook - 1

twitter - 1

pinterest - 0

bonus points: 11

podcasts - 2

return player - 1

blinkie - 1

st. patrick's day motif - 2

companion page - 1

3+ photos - 1

blog post for journaling - 1

scrap food - 1

3+ pages from kit - 1

a note on adding rules:  anyone can suggest rules.  most are added.  negative points are never written into the rules.  multiple points for one thing are rarely (go ahead and read never) added.  generally it's one point per.  it's just simpler that way.

once you've played for the first time, it is fun to try to beat your own record the next year.

this is all i can think of to help you in your enjoyment of the game.  if you have any questions, please ask!  play on!  :)

I'm looking forward to it.  I am a very slow scrapper, so the points won't be something that I will be racking up, but I think it will be good for inspiring me to keep finding time to scrap or make cards.  :)

#103022 Talking Smack here

Posted by ladyofthelake318 on 22 March 2017 - 11:07 PM

I was about out of "current" photos, but we've been going through a bunch of stuff in the garage and I brought in some old photos.  I am LOVING scrapping my babies (and even from before) -- they'll be 21 and 27 in July this year, so it's been fun reminiscing.  This jumpstarted my mojo, along with a birthday weekend that I could claim as my own selfishly without any guilt whatsoever :-)  I was shocked to be on the leader board (even if it was #9).  Two years ago, when I first found Calvinball, I had a heart attack on Mar 2 and got nothing really done.  Last year, I don't remember what was going on, but I was busy and had abandoned it by this time.  This is my year, though!  And I'm having a blast.

Ok.......I thought maybe I should get extra  points for having a tooth pulled today but then I thought that might be cheating and of course I wouldn't dream of cheating.

So--I looked at the rules tonight and WOWZA--I am sure I am going to be able to get 40 points per layout!!  Watch out ladies--I'll be scrapping this weekend and racking up those points!

#102278 Calvinball 2017 ~ Let's Get this Party Started!!

Posted by Katiecb on 23 February 2017 - 10:42 AM

This will be my third year, and I'm pretty sure I haven't made a single layout for any of them! My scrapbooking took a huge dive a few years ago, when the kids became more active, and I haven't been able to get back on track, no matter how hard I try. Anyway, this is one of the most fun and flexible challenges I've seen, and I figure if anything is going to get me scrapping again, it will be this one!

I got a new computer for Christmas and I haven't installed anything on it yet (except some cloud applications and MS Office.) I need to find my PSE disc and copy over my photos and kits this week!

#102270 Calvinball 2017 ~ Let's Get this Party Started!!

Posted by Maribeth on 23 February 2017 - 06:28 AM

This is my second year.  I did pretty well last year I came in 10th.  My page count was 112 and I want to exceed that this year.  I don't remember exactly how I found out about it.  I was a lurker on the forum and I think I just saw the CalvinBall thread and it sounded like fun.  I am all about the page count.  I have so many scrapbooking projects and it super important for me to get as much done as possible, so I am really into events that promote productivity.  I have my own craft room, but it is small, so my husband lets me take over the entire house so that I can set up stations for everything imaginable, a die cutting station, a sewing stations, an eyelet station, a punch station, a trimmer station, a drying station - well you get the picture.  That helps my productivity as I don't have to stop to get a tool out or rearrange things in order to use one tool over another.

Come on March 1!

#102317 Calvinball 2017 ~ Let's Get this Party Started!!

Posted by gonewiththewind on 25 February 2017 - 01:49 PM

This is my second year playing Calvinball. Last year I was in FIRST PLACE with 630 points and 71 layouts! Woo-Hoo! BRAGGING RIGHTS! LOL

I have had a downswing in my health with my chronic back pain, and have been struggling to be at my computer as much. I almost finished the Month of Challenges at The Lilypad in January with 25 layouts, but haven't scrapped much in February.

It would be nice to make at least 71 layouts again, but we'll see what happens! I have to take it one day at a time.

Wishing everyone outstanding productivity this year! Let's fill up our memory books!!!!
